Legal answer method

How to Write Better Law Answers

1. Identify the Issue

Answer the precise legal question asked instead of reproducing everything you remember about the topic.

2. State the Rule

Use the correct BNS/BNSS/BSA provision, principle and leading authority where genuinely relevant.

3. Apply & Conclude

Connect the rule to the facts or proposition and close with a direct legal conclusion.

Current-law discipline:

Where older PYQs use IPC, CrPC or the Evidence Act, practise rewriting the answer under BNS, BNSS and BSA.

Non-law papers

Do Not Treat GS and General Hindi as Side Papers

General Studies

Prepare concise descriptive notes on national issues and Uttarakhand-specific history, geography, statehood, administration, economy, culture and current developments.

General Hindi

Build language accuracy, grammar, vocabulary and written-expression practice early. A 100-mark language paper can materially affect the written total.

Writing routine

A Practical Mains Answer-Writing Cycle

StageWhat to do
Topic preparationRead statute/notes and reduce the topic to a one-page recall sheet.
Untimed answerFocus on structure and legal completeness first.
Timed answerWrite to the prescribed word/time limit without consulting notes.
ReviewCheck law, structure, missed points, handwriting/readability and time use.
RewriteImprove weak answers rather than merely collecting feedback.

Legal answer architecture

Anatomy of a Strong Legal Answer

01

Opening / Issue

Identify the legal point in one or two lines. Do not spend the first paragraph rewriting the question.

02

Governing Law

State the relevant BNS, BNSS, BSA or Police Act provision/principle. Add a case only if it strengthens the point.

03

Explanation / Application

Explain ingredients, exceptions or procedure. For a problem question, apply each rule to the facts.

04

Conclusion

Close with the legal result or the proposition the question asked you to establish.

Different questions, different structures

Match Your Structure to the Question Type

Question typeBest structureCommon mistake
Explain / short noteDefinition → essentials → provision → brief example / authorityWriting a full essay
DistinguishShort introduction → point-wise / tabular differences → conclusionExplaining only one concept
Problem questionIssues → rules → fact application → conclusion for each issueWriting theory without using facts
Discuss / critically examineRule → rationale → scope → limitations / competing view → conclusionOne-sided note with no analysis
Procedure questionStage-wise sequence with statutory anchorsRandom list of sections
Sections and case law

How to Use Bare-Act Language, Sections and Case Law

Sections

Quote a section number when reasonably confident. If uncertain, state the legal rule accurately rather than inventing a citation.

Bare-Act Language

Use statutory phrases where they matter—especially ingredients, exceptions, presumptions, powers and procedural conditions.

Case Law

Use leading cases selectively to support a proposition. A relevant authority is useful; a decorative list of names is not.

New-code caution:

Many leading cases arose under IPC, CrPC or the Evidence Act. Use the principle only after checking whether it remains compatible with BNS, BNSS or BSA.

Fact problems

Problem Questions — A Complete Method

  1. Read the call of the question first. Know what you must decide.
  2. Break facts into legal issues. Separate offence, liability, procedure, evidence and defence questions.
  3. State the governing rule for each issue. Use current statutory law.
  4. Apply facts explicitly. Use phrases such as “On these facts…” or “Because X is present/absent…”
  5. Deal with exceptions and competing arguments. Do not hide an obvious defence.
  6. Conclude issue-wise. Avoid a vague final paragraph that does not answer liability/procedure.
Readable answers score better

Introductions, Conclusions and Presentation

Use visible structure

  • Short paragraphs
  • Issue-based subheads where useful
  • Numbered points for ingredients / procedure
  • Tables for distinctions
  • Underline only key statutory words

Avoid presentation traps

  • Page-long paragraphs
  • Excessive headings for a short answer
  • Decorative quotations
  • Uncertain section numbers written confidently
  • Long introductions that delay the legal answer
Complete the paper

Time Management Under the Mains Scheme

Before writingDuring writingFinal minutes
Scan question paper, marks and compulsory choices.Match answer length to marks; do not let one favourite answer consume another question’s time.Complete unfinished conclusions, question numbers and essential statutory corrections.
Practice rule:

Your timed answer should be shorter and cleaner than your untimed study answer. The examination rewards completion under constraints.

Do not wait for the Prelims result to learn how to write.

Maintain a small weekly Mains writing habit now, then increase to timed sets and full papers after Prelims.

UKAPO Mains Mistakes to Eliminate

Law-answer mistakes

  • Writing everything known about a topic.
  • Using old-code sections as if current.
  • Giving a case name without the proposition.
  • Ignoring facts in a problem question.
  • No conclusion.

Exam-management mistakes

  • Starting answer writing only after Prelims.
  • Ignoring General Hindi.
  • Never writing full papers.
  • Taking feedback but not rewriting.
  • Spending disproportionate time on early answers.
Think across papers

UKAPO Mains Is Four Papers, but Your Preparation Should Be One Integrated System

The written examination rewards different skills across GS, Hindi and Law, but the preparation should reinforce itself. Current legal developments can support GS and Interview; prosecution-oriented examples can improve Law answers; disciplined language practice improves clarity across every paper. Build one weekly plan that touches all four papers rather than completing one and postponing the others.

Law Core

BNS, BNSS, BSA and Police Act require statutory accuracy, issue identification and application.

General Studies

National and Uttarakhand issues require structured descriptive writing, factual support and balanced analysis.

General Hindi

Language accuracy improves through repeated written practice and should run in parallel rather than as a final-month subject.

Paper III

Law-I Blueprint: Criminal Law, Procedure and Police Act

Substantive Criminal Law

Prepare BNS through ingredients, exceptions, classifications and distinctions. A strong Mains answer should explain why the facts satisfy or fail each legal ingredient instead of merely naming the offence.

Criminal Procedure

Prepare BNSS as procedural flows—FIR/information, investigation, arrest, process, cognizance, charge, trial, bail, judgment, appeal/revision—so answers can present the correct sequence.

Police Act

Use the Uttarakhand Police Act as a compact state-law scoring area. Definitions, duties, powers, organisation and Revenue Police distinctions can support both direct questions and practical answers.

Prosecution Angle

Where appropriate, explain the role of the prosecutor, evidentiary sufficiency, fairness to the accused, witness handling and duties toward the court. This makes the answer relevant to the post rather than generic law-school writing.

Law-I should feel like one criminal-process story.

Do not study BNS, BNSS and the Police Act as isolated islands. A practical prosecution problem moves from an alleged offence, to police action and investigation, to process before court, bail/charge/trial and the prosecutor’s role. Building these links helps both problem questions and interview preparation.

Paper IV

Law-II Blueprint: Turn Evidence Rules into Application

Evidence answers often improve dramatically when you move from definitions to a three-step method: identify the fact/evidence, state the rule governing relevance or proof, and explain the legal consequence.

BSA areaMains preparation method
RelevancyPractise short fact patterns asking why a fact is relevant or irrelevant
Admissions & confessionsCompare maker, voluntariness/restrictions and evidentiary effect
Dying declarationPrepare conditions, evidentiary value and leading judicial principles
Documentary/electronic evidenceBuild a proof checklist for originals, secondary evidence and electronic records
Burden & presumptionsPractise identifying who must prove what and when burdens shift
WitnessesRevise examination sequence, competency and credibility tools

Rule layer

Know the governing BSA principle, conditions, exception and burden/presumption where relevant.

Application layer

Ask what fact is being proved, through what evidence, by whom, subject to what admissibility/relevancy condition, and what legal effect follows.

Evidence answers become stronger when the statutory rule is connected to a courtroom problem instead of being reproduced as abstract theory. Use short factual illustrations during practice, but keep the final answer focused on the question asked.

Exam simulation

Move from Individual Answers to Full-Paper Practice

Many candidates can write one good answer but cannot sustain quality across a full paper. Full-paper practice exposes time allocation, fatigue, handwriting decline, over-writing and poor question selection.

Practice stageGoal
Single answersLearn structure and legal completeness
3-answer setsBuild pacing and transition between topics
Half paperTest time allocation and consistency
Full paperSimulate real endurance, choice and completion pressure
Post-paper rewriteCorrect the weakest answer while feedback is fresh
A full-paper simulation tests decisions that single answers cannot.

You must decide question order, how long to spend on each answer, when to stop adding points, how much space to reserve and how to recover after a difficult question. Start full-paper practice only after enough individual answers are stable, but do not postpone it to the final week. Finishing a balanced paper is itself an examination skill.

Self-evaluation

Score Every Practice Answer on the Same 6-Point Rubric

1. Issue

Did I answer the exact question asked?

2. Law

Was the statutory proposition current and accurate?

3. Structure

Could an evaluator follow the answer quickly?

4. Application

Did I connect law to facts/argument instead of only describing it?

5. Authority

Were sections/cases relevant and accurate?

6. Time & Presentation

Was the answer completed within time, legible and proportionate to marks?

Critical / analytical questionLegal framework → rationale → competing considerations → case/authority where useful → balanced conclusion.
Authority without clutter

How to Use Sections and Case Law Without Making the Answer Artificial

Use sections when confident

A correct provision strengthens precision. A wrong section number weakens an otherwise correct answer. If uncertain, accurately state the legal rule instead of inventing a citation.

Use cases for propositions

Cite a leading authority when it clarifies the principle, exception or application. Do not insert case names merely to make an answer look “advanced”.

Current-law caution:

Where an older leading case arose under IPC, CrPC or the Evidence Act, explain the principle carefully and ensure the present statutory framework under BNS, BNSS or BSA has not materially changed the proposition.

Self-evaluation

Score Every Practice Answer on the Same 10-Point Rubric

DimensionMarksQuestion to ask
Issue identification2Did I answer the actual question asked?
Legal accuracy2Are the provisions/principles correct and current?
Structure2Is the answer easy to follow with logical sequencing?
Application / analysis2Did I apply law to the issue instead of merely reproducing notes?
Presentation / conclusion2Is the answer readable, concise and properly concluded?

The value of a fixed rubric is consistency. You can see whether improvement is coming from better law, better structure or simply writing faster.

Move beyond isolated answers

When to Shift from Individual Answers to Full-Paper Practice

Stage 1 — Single Answer

Learn structure and legal completeness without severe time pressure.

Stage 2 — Mini Set

Write 3–5 questions back-to-back so time allocation and fatigue begin to matter.

Stage 3 — Full Paper

Practise the complete paper within the prescribed duration, including question selection, sequencing and final-page time pressure.

Write from revision notes

Your Mains Notes Should Be Designed for Retrieval, Not Storage

For each law topic

  • One-line issue/definition
  • Current statutory provision
  • Elements / ingredients
  • Exceptions
  • 1–2 leading authorities where useful
  • One problem-question application point

For each GS topic

  • Short factual background
  • Uttarakhand angle where relevant
  • Current issue / example
  • Balanced conclusion
  • Data only if reliable and revisable
Authoritative basis

UKAPO Mains & Answer Writing FAQs

When should I start Mains answer writing?

Start before Prelims at a controlled frequency. Waiting for the Prelims result creates an avoidable transition gap.

Should I quote section numbers in law answers?

Use section numbers when you are confident. Accuracy is more valuable than inserting a doubtful citation.

How important are case laws?

Use leading cases selectively to strengthen legal propositions. A relevant authority helps; a list of unrelated cases does not.

How can I improve speed?

Practise within actual word and time limits, review what consumed time, and repeat the same answer in a tighter structure.
