Source discipline:

Where a paper is not hosted on UKPSC, treat the external copy as an archive for study convenience—not as an official UKPSC publication page.

First pass: understand the examiner

Do not begin by calculating marks. Read the paper for the type of memory being tested: direct provision, conceptual distinction, current-affairs recall, Uttarakhand fact, procedural sequence or analytical writing.

Second pass: understand yourself

Now classify every wrong or doubtful question. A wrong answer caused by weak law requires re-reading; a wrong answer caused by rushed reading requires attempt-strategy correction; a forgotten Uttarakhand fact requires a revision-sheet entry. Different errors need different remedies.

Most recent complete APO paper setStart here for current pattern depth, paper style and difficulty calibration.
Older Prelims papersUse for recurring statutory concepts, option design and state-GS trends.

Do not treat an old question as current law.

Use old papers to learn the tested concept and question style, then answer the same issue under BNS, BNSS or BSA where the legal regime has changed.

What PYQs reveal

What to Extract from UKAPO PYQs

Bare-Act Precision

Objective law questions reward exact statutory understanding, exceptions, definitions and procedural sequencing.

Uttarakhand-Specific Weight

State GK, Revenue Police and the Uttarakhand Police Act are meaningful differentiators from generic prosecution exams.

Mains Expression

Descriptive papers require issue spotting, provision-based explanation, legal reasoning and concise structure under time pressure.

PYQ workflow

A Better Way to Use Previous Papers

1. Solve Untimed First

Identify what you know, what you misread and which areas repeatedly appear.

2. Build an Error Log

Record provision mistakes, guessing errors, state-GK gaps and Hindi weak areas.

3. Convert Old Law

Map IPC→BNS, CrPC→BNSS and Evidence Act→BSA for every legally changed PYQ.

4. Reattempt Timed

Use the same paper later under exam conditions and compare accuracy, speed and negative-marking risk.

Legal transition

Using IPC/CrPC/Evidence PYQs in the BNS–BNSS–BSA Era

The concept tested may remain relevant even where section numbering or statutory wording has changed. Identify the legal principle first, then locate its current statutory home and note any substantive change.

Prelims Paper I

How to Analyse the General Studies PYQs

National GS bucket

  • History and National Movement
  • Polity / Constitution
  • Geography and Economy
  • General Science
  • Current affairs

Uttarakhand-specific bucket

  • History and statehood movement
  • Art, culture, fairs and festivals
  • Rivers, mountains, forests and tribes
  • Administration and Revenue Police
  • State institutions and current affairs
Useful coding method:

Mark each question N (national static), U (Uttarakhand static), C (current affairs) or A (administrative/state system). This gives you a practical revision map without inventing false precision from a single paper.

How to Analyse the Law PYQs

Old-paper bucketCurrent preparation bucketWhat to record in your PYQ notebook
IPC questionsBNSConcept tested, current section, changed ingredients/wording

Mains papers

What to Extract from the Mains PYQs

Question Directive

Identify whether UKPSC asks to explain, distinguish, critically discuss, apply facts, write a note or state the law.

Answer Breadth

Observe whether a question needs a short statutory explanation or a fuller answer with principle, provision, application and authority.

Time / Word Discipline

Use the paper to decide how much time an answer can realistically receive. A legally correct unfinished paper is still a weak exam performance.

PYQ → Sectional Test → Full Mock Progression

01

Untimed PYQs

Use the first attempt to diagnose topic gaps and examiner language.

02

Timed PYQs + Sectionals

Reattempt under time and then test the weak subject with fresh questions.

03

Full Mock Conditions

Test whether the same errors survive when GS, law, speed and negative marking operate together.

Seen the real papers? Now test whether the same gaps survive under fresh questions.

Use the bilingual UKAPO Prelims Test Series after your PYQ error log starts guiding revision.

Common PYQ Preparation Mistakes

Mechanical solving

  • Checking the answer and moving on.
  • Memorising an old section number.
  • Never classifying why a wrong option looked attractive.
  • Solving only the latest paper once.

Better approach

  • Code each error by reason.
  • Convert old-law questions to current law.
  • Reattempt the same paper under time.
  • Use weak areas to select sectional tests and revision blocks.
GS analysis

Build a Uttarakhand GK Heat Map from PYQs

Instead of keeping a long list of “important Uttarakhand topics,” classify every state-specific question into a repeatable theme. After 2–3 papers, the pattern becomes visible and revision can be weighted accordingly.

History & Statehood

Mark questions on regional history, freedom movement, statehood agitation, personalities and historical institutions.

Geography & Environment

Tag rivers, glaciers, lakes, peaks, forests, parks, crops, irrigation, disasters and protected areas.

Administration & Culture

Separate Revenue Police, Panchayati Raj, boards, museums, tribes, fairs, festivals and local institutions.

Use the heat map correctly:

High-frequency topics deserve more revision, but low-frequency syllabus areas cannot be abandoned because a fresh paper can rebalance the distribution.

Old law → current law

Convert Every Old Law PYQ into a Current-Law Revision Card

Old-paper referenceCurrent preparation action
IPC offence questionIdentify the equivalent BNS provision, compare ingredients and note any material change
CrPC procedure questionLocate the BNSS provision, rewrite the sequence and note changed terminology/timelines where relevant
Evidence Act questionMap the concept to BSA and recheck electronic/documentary evidence changes
Police Act questionVerify against the current Uttarakhand Police Act text and later amendments

A useful PYQ notebook therefore has four columns: question → concept tested → current section/source → mistake/revision note. This turns historical papers into a living revision tool.

Do not create a mechanical old-section → new-section chart only.

For each IPC/CrPC/Evidence Act PYQ, record whether the legal substance remained the same, moved to a different section, changed in wording, introduced a new procedural mechanism or disappeared from the current code. The useful output is a “concept + current provision + change note”, not merely two section numbers beside each other.

This matters because UKAPO 2026-27 preparation is happening after the new criminal codes came into force. Old PYQs remain valuable for examiner behaviour and legal concepts, but the answer you train yourself to recall must be the current law unless the question specifically asks historical comparison.

Mains extraction

How to Turn a Mains PYQ into an Answer-Writing Drill

Stage 1 — Outline

Spend 2–3 minutes identifying the issue, legal rule, sub-parts and likely conclusion before writing the full answer.

Stage 2 — Write

Answer within a self-imposed time limit using headings, statutory provisions and only relevant case law.

Stage 3 — Audit

Check legal accuracy, structure, missing issues, current-law mapping, handwriting/readability and whether the conclusion actually answered the question.

30-day cycle

A 30-Day PYQ Integration Plan

DaysPYQ work
1–5Diagnostic attempt of the most recent Prelims GS and Law papers
6–10Topic tagging + old-law to new-law conversion + Uttarakhand GK heat map
11–15Sectional revision based on the largest error clusters
16–20Older paper practice to test whether the same weakness repeats
21–25Mains PYQ outlines and short timed answers
26–30Reattempt the first papers under strict time and compare net improvement
Readiness indicator

When Have You “Finished” a Previous Paper?

A paper is not finished when you have seen the answer key. It is finished when every wrong or doubtful question has been classified, the relevant current provision has been checked, the topic has been revised, and the paper has been reattempted later without relying on memory of the answer key.

Incomplete PYQ Work

Solve once → check score → move to the next paper.

Complete PYQ Work

Solve → classify → verify current law → revise → retest → transfer persistent weaknesses into the mock-test error log.

Build one master notebook

Your UKAPO PYQ Notebook Should Capture Patterns, Not Just Answers

For every paper, keep a compact record of the question, topic, correct rule, current-law provision and the reason you got it wrong or found it difficult. Over time this becomes a personalised high-yield revision source built from UKPSC’s own question style.

ColumnExample use
Question/topic“Confession to police officer” / BSA admissions-confessions
Current provisionWrite the present BSA provision rather than the old Evidence Act section alone
Error typeConcept / memory / option trap / old-law confusion
Revision actionRe-read provision + 10 related MCQs + one short answer
Retest dateSchedule a later retrieval check instead of immediate repetition only
Use answer keys properly

How to Use UKPSC Answer Keys Alongside Previous Papers

A previous question paper tells you what was asked; the official answer key helps validate the Commission’s accepted option for that examination. Use both together, but remember that an old answer key remains tied to the law and facts applicable to that paper.

Step 1 — Attempt First

Do not open the answer key while solving. Mark questions as sure, doubtful or guessed.

Step 2 — Verify

Check the official answer and identify whether your error was concept, memory, reading or risk-selection.

Step 3 — Update Current Law

If the question concerns IPC, CrPC or Evidence Act, verify the present BNS, BNSS or BSA position before adding the point to your 2026-27 revision notes.

Example:

An old answer may be perfectly correct for the statute then in force. Your present revision note should still record the current provision and any material change under the new criminal codes.

Trend analysis without guessing

How to Identify a Real PYQ Trend

Weak trend analysisBetter trend analysis
“This topic came twice, so it will definitely come again.”“This topic repeatedly tests a core statutory concept, so it deserves high-confidence revision.”
Counting only question frequencyAlso classify question type: definition, exception, procedure, application, chronology or factual recall.
Ignoring the changed lawTranslate historical questions into the current legal framework.
Studying only repeated topicsUse repetition to prioritise revision while still covering the complete notified syllabus.
Calibrate difficulty

Use PYQs to Set the Right Depth of Study

Prelims depth

If questions are provision-heavy, your notes must support exact recall. If options test fine distinctions, revise exceptions and closely related concepts together. If Uttarakhand facts are direct, build fast-recall tables and maps.

Mains depth

If questions demand explanation or problem-solving, move beyond one-line notes. Prepare a short answer framework containing issue, rule, provision, application, authority where relevant and conclusion.

The purpose of PYQs is not to predict the next paper word-for-word. Their highest value is helping you choose the correct depth of preparation for each syllabus area.

Repeatable weekly system

A 7-Day PYQ Cycle You Can Repeat Throughout Preparation

DayTask
Day 1Solve one Prelims paper or a 50-question PYQ block without notes.
Day 2Verify answers, classify errors and create current-law correction notes.
Day 3Revise the two largest weak areas identified by the paper.
Day 4Solve fresh sectional MCQs from those weak areas.
Day 5Write 2–3 Mains answers from related PYQ themes.
Day 6Revise Uttarakhand GK/PYQ heat-map entries and difficult facts.
Day 7Reattempt selected wrong/doubtful questions without looking at prior answers.

UKAPO Previous Year Paper FAQs

Which UKAPO PYQs should I start with?

Start with the most recent complete APO paper set, then use older papers to deepen pattern recognition.

Can I use old IPC/CrPC questions after BNS/BNSS?

Yes, but remap them to current statutory provisions. Do not memorise obsolete section numbers as current law.

Should I solve PYQs before completing the syllabus?

A diagnostic attempt early is useful. Reattempt them after subject coverage and again during final revision.

Are PYQs enough for Prelims?

No. Current preparation also requires new-law MCQs, current affairs, Uttarakhand GK and timed mocks.
