How the UKAPO Selection Process Fits Together

01

Preliminary Examination

Objective screening through General Studies and Law. Preparation demands recall, statutory accuracy, option elimination and negative-marking discipline.

02

Main Written Examination

Four descriptive papers test breadth, legal reasoning, language and the ability to write complete answers under time pressure.

03

Interview / Personality Test

The final stage shifts from written recall to legal application, communication, public-service judgment and prosecution-oriented awareness.

Read every law topic at three levels:

Level 1 — concept: understand the legal rule and its ingredients. Level 2 — bare Act: know definitions, provisos, exceptions, procedural sequence and statutory language that can generate objective questions. Level 3 — application: be able to explain the same rule in a Mains answer or practical prosecution situation. This three-level method prevents the common problem of preparing separate, disconnected notes for Prelims and Mains.

Descriptive examination

Mains Papers — What Each Paper Actually Demands

Paper I — General Studies (100)

Requires deeper written treatment of national and Uttarakhand issues than the objective Prelims paper.

Paper II — General Hindi (100)

Tests Hindi-language accuracy and written expression. It deserves independent practice rather than post-Prelims cramming.

Paper III — Law-I (100)

Criminal law and procedure with the Uttarakhand Police Act. Current preparation should be BNS + BNSS centred.

Paper IV — Law-II (100)

Evidence law. Current preparation should be BSA centred, including electronic/documentary evidence developments.

Language note:

Except the General Hindi paper, the established UKAPO Mains framework permits answers in Hindi or English. Verify the fresh notification for the final 2026-27 language rule.

Current-law transition

IPC → BNS, CrPC → BNSS, Evidence Act → BSA: How to Map the Syllabus

Older syllabus language / PYQ sourceCurrent preparationWhat to verify
IPC concepts and sectionsBNS, 2023Renumbering, changed ingredients, new offences, deleted/merged provisions
CrPC procedureBNSS, 2023New timelines, electronic/process changes and revised section references
Indian Evidence ActBSA, 2023Electronic evidence wording, presumptions, certificates and section mapping
Rule for PYQs:

Use an old question to identify the concept, then answer it from the current law. Do not mechanically substitute a new section number without checking whether the legal rule itself changed.

Turn the syllabus into a preparation plan—not a reading list.

Use the dedicated Prelims and Mains pages to convert subject weightage into revision, testing and answer-writing priorities.

Very highUttarakhand Police ActCompact state Act with an established 15-question Prelims block.

Avoid these errors

Common UKAPO Syllabus Preparation Mistakes

Content mistakes

  • Studying only generic judiciary subjects.
  • Ignoring the Uttarakhand Police Act.
  • Using old IPC/CrPC/Evidence notes without current-law mapping.
  • Leaving Uttarakhand GK for the final month.

Strategy mistakes

  • Preparing Prelims without any Mains writing.
  • Reading the syllabus once but never turning it into a revision tracker.
  • Ignoring General Hindi because it is not a law paper.
  • Using PYQs only as final-stage tests instead of early diagnostics.
GS blueprint

General Studies — Detailed UKAPO Preparation Map

The GS component combines national-level fundamentals with a substantial Uttarakhand-specific layer. Prepare it in clusters so that revision remains manageable and current affairs can be attached to the correct static topic.

General Science & Environment

Everyday science, natural resources, ecology, environment and disaster-related issues should be prepared at an objective-exam level rather than through specialist textbooks.

History & National Movement

Modern Indian history, the freedom movement and Uttarakhand’s role in wider political/social movements should be linked with major personalities and events.

Polity & Constitution

Constitutional structure, Fundamental Rights, Duties, Directive Principles, Parliament, State institutions and basic governance should be revised through concise concept notes.

Geography

Indian geography should be supplemented with Uttarakhand mountains, rivers, glaciers, forests, districts, agriculture, irrigation, protected areas and disaster geography.

Economy & Development

Prepare basic Indian economy alongside Uttarakhand development indicators, schemes, tourism, agriculture, infrastructure and current economic initiatives.

Uttarakhand Administration & Culture

Revenue Police, Panchayati Raj, statehood, tribes, fairs, festivals, institutions, museums, boards, personalities and local current affairs deserve a separate notebook.

Law map 1

BNS Preparation Map for the Substantive Criminal-Law Block

The established law-paper distribution placed the largest share on substantive criminal law. Current preparation should therefore build BNS through offence ingredients and general principles—not only through section-number memorisation.

General Principles

Definitions, punishments, general exceptions, common intention/common liability concepts, abetment, conspiracy and attempt should form the conceptual base.

Offences Against the Human Body

Culpable homicide/murder, causing death by negligence, hurt/grievous hurt, wrongful restraint/confinement, assault, kidnapping and abduction are high-value doctrinal areas.

Offences Against Women

Sexual offences, marriage-related offences, cruelty, dowry death and related provisions require exact ingredients and distinction between neighbouring offences.

Property & Public Order

Theft, extortion, robbery, dacoity, misappropriation, cheating, mischief, trespass and offences affecting public tranquillity should be compared through ingredient tables.

New-law layer:

Where BNS changes terminology, structure or introduces a new offence, prepare the change itself because transition-based questions are natural examination material.

Law map 2

BNSS Preparation Map for Criminal Procedure

Courts & Jurisdiction

Constitution, powers and territorial/subject jurisdiction of criminal courts provide the framework for every later procedural topic.

Arrest & Investigation

Arrest powers, rights of arrested persons, information to police, investigation, search/seizure and procedural safeguards need sequence-based revision.

Process & Appearance

Summons, warrants, proclamation, attachment and production of persons/things are suited to comparison charts and objective questions.

Cognizance to Charge

Complaint/police-report routes, commencement before Magistrates, cognizance and framing of charge should be linked as one procedural flow.

Trial, Judgment & Sentencing

Understand major trial types, evidence stage, judgment and post-judgment consequences rather than learning disconnected provisions.

Bail, Appeal & Revision

Bail/bonds, reference, appeal and revision are recurring practical areas and especially important for prosecution-oriented understanding.

Law map 3

BSA Preparation Map for Evidence

Evidence blockWhat to master
Relevancy of factsLogical/statutory connection, transaction, motive, conduct and related-fact principles
Admissions & confessionsWho can make them, when relevant, exclusions and evidentiary effect
Dying declaration / statementsConditions of relevance and judicial treatment
Documentary & electronic evidencePrimary/secondary evidence, electronic records, presumptions and proof requirements
Burden & presumptionsWho must prove, shifting burdens and statutory presumptions
WitnessesCompetency, examination, cross-examination, impeachment and refreshing memory

Evidence is easier to retain when you solve short factual situations after every topic instead of reading the statute in isolation.

State law

Uttarakhand Police Act — What the Syllabus Demands

The established law-paper framework gave 15 questions to the Uttarakhand Police Act. The practical implication is simple: this compact State statute should be revised multiple times because direct provision-based questions can produce efficient marks.

Definitions & Organisation

Know the statutory vocabulary, police organisation, supervisory structure and authorities under the Act.

Duties & Functions

Prepare duties, powers, station-level responsibilities and public-order/accountability provisions through exact bare-Act language.

Revenue Police Distinction

The Act’s treatment of Revenue Police Areas is an important Uttarakhand-specific legal distinction and should be revised separately.

Descriptive conversion

What Changes When the Same Syllabus Moves from Prelims to Mains?

Prelims skillMains skill
Recognise the correct propositionState the proposition accurately in your own answer
Identify a section/exceptionExplain the section, exception and legal consequence
Choose the correct procedural stepWrite the procedure in sequence and apply it
Recall a case-law principleUse the case only where it strengthens the answer
Remember a Hindi/GS factPresent a coherent descriptive response within time
Best preparation model:

After every important law topic, practise both 10–20 MCQs and one short descriptive answer. This prevents Prelims preparation from becoming unusable for Mains.

Prelims asks: can you identify?

Objective preparation should make you sensitive to statutory wording, close options, exceptions and procedural order. Revision therefore needs short recall cycles and repeated MCQ exposure.

Mains asks: can you explain and apply?

The same topic must be expanded into a coherent legal answer: identify the issue, state the current provision, explain the principle, apply it where facts are given and conclude directly. The syllabus may overlap, but the output skill is different.

A useful syllabus notebook should therefore have one column for Prelims traps and one for Mains answer points. This keeps the preparation integrated and reduces duplication when the written stage begins.
