Salary clarity

Basic Pay vs Gross Salary vs In-Hand Salary

Basic Pay

The fixed amount in the applicable J-level pay matrix. Entry J-1 begins at ₹77,840.

Gross Salary

Basic pay plus admissible allowances and other components applicable to the officer/posting.

In-Hand / Net Pay

Gross salary after applicable deductions. It can vary by posting, accommodation, tax, pension-related deductions and individual circumstances.

Why we do not publish a fake fixed take-home figure

No single responsible in-hand figure applies to every J&K Civil Judge. Allowances and deductions change with posting, accommodation and applicable government/judicial orders. Treat any website claiming one universal net salary as an estimate unless it discloses its assumptions.

Allowances & benefits

Allowances and Service Benefits — How to Read Them

Judicial officers may receive allowances and facilities admissible under the applicable judicial-pay, government and High Court framework. The amount can depend on posting and whether an official facility or accommodation is provided.

Posting-sensitive components

HRA or official accommodation and location-linked components should be checked against the current order applicable to the officer.

Judicial-service facilities

Official facilities can be governed by separate High Court/Government orders rather than the basic pay rule itself.

Do not double count

If a facility is provided in kind, a cash allowance may not operate in the same way. Read the current order before calculating gross pay.

Salary disclaimer

Pay levels, allowances and facilities may be revised through later Government or judicial-pay orders. This page uses the current official pay framework available as of 25 September 2026.

What the post actually involves

What a J&K Civil Judge Actually Does

Civil adjudication

Hear and decide civil matters within assigned territorial and pecuniary jurisdiction, frame issues, record evidence, pass interim orders and deliver judgments/decrees.

Criminal / Magistracy work

Depending on the posting and powers conferred, a Civil Judge (Junior Division) may also function in a magistracy assignment and deal with criminal-process work within jurisdiction.

Court administration

Manage the court docket, compliance, records, process, staff coordination and time-bound judicial work alongside adjudication.

The High Court’s current Civil Judge (Junior Division) profiles show postings such as Munsiff, Additional Munsiff and different Magistrate assignments across J&K. Actual work therefore depends on the posting and powers conferred.

Current court structure

Posting, Jurisdiction & 2026 Pecuniary Revision

Civil jurisdiction update

High Court Notification No. 1303 of 2026/RG dated 16 May 2026 gives Civil Judges (Junior Division) power to hear civil suits up to ₹5,00,000 within local jurisdiction, prospectively from 1 June 2026. Civil Judges (Senior Division) are invested up to ₹20,00,000. Pending suits as on 31 May 2026 continue in their existing courts.

This is a court-jurisdiction update, not a salary rule. It is included because it directly explains the work profile and the civil jurisdiction a newly appointed officer may encounter.

Career progression

Career Progression: From Junior Division Onward

Career pointWhat it means
Civil Judge (Junior Division)Entry judicial cadre; current pay level J-1.
ACP-I / ACP-IIFinancial progression under the revised pay rules after the prescribed continuous-service periods, subject to the rules.
Civil Judge (Senior Division)Higher judicial cadre reached through the applicable promotion/service process; not merely by receiving ACP.
District Judge / Higher Judicial ServiceA separate higher cadre governed by the applicable service/recruitment/promotion framework.
Important distinction

ACP is not the same thing as promotion. Do not read J-2 or J-3 financial progression as an automatic change of judicial designation.

Appointment conditions

Probation, Training & First Posting

Training, probation and joining requirements must be taken from the fresh recruitment and appointment orders applicable to the selected candidate. Recent appointment material also shows pre-appointment/judicial training can form part of the joining framework. Because these conditions can change by recruitment cycle, this page does not invent a fixed training duration for 2027.

For aspirants

Treat the job profile as both adjudicatory and administrative. Preparation that develops procedural accuracy, writing discipline and command over local court rules remains useful beyond the examination.

Common confusions

Common J&K Civil Judge Salary Myths

“₹77,840 is in-hand salary”

Incorrect. ₹77,840 is the entry basic-pay figure in J-1.

“ACP means automatic promotion”

Incorrect. ACP is financial progression under the pay rules; cadre promotion is a separate service process.

“All judges receive identical allowances”

Not safely assumed. Posting, accommodation and the applicable order matter.

“Salary is fixed forever”

No. Judicial pay and allowances can be revised by later orders.
